Andrew McDonald's Photography
Andrew McDonald  > Galleries > 2009 Alaska Trip
In early September of 2009 I went to Denali National Park with a group of photographers from the Nikonians web site. There were 33 of us all together. We flew (one drove!) into Anchorage, AK on Saturday and Sunday we took the Alaska Railroad up to Denali National Park. We spent three days in the park and on Thursday we took the train back to Anchorage. Friday we took another train into the Chugach National Forest to see Spencer Glacier. I took 1700 photos on this trip. I believe these 50 images (10/day) are representative of the sights experienced during the trip. I figured 50 would be less boring than the 349 I still have on my hard drive after deleting the rest.

Andrew McDonald > Alaska "Highway" System
Alongside the railroad tracks I kept seeing these four-wheeler tracks. I guess that's how they get around locally since there aren't any real roads out here.

At Broad Pass the trains stropped to transfer supplies and people. There were high school kids who weren't allowed to go all the way to the other end of the line so the southbound kids switch to the northbound train and vice-versa.

Andrew McDonald > River
There were two "flavors" of water in Alaska. The icy clear rivers like this one and the muddy grey rivers. The icy clear ones were from melted snow in the mountains while the muddy grey ones were actually full of silt coming from glacial melt. No fish can live in the silt filled rivers because it clogs their gills.
